The Beloved Disciple

John and his Gospel can be viewed and easily understood through his first letter.

In his letter to us he tells us why he has written:

"I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life."

The above quote comes at the end of the letter, a letter to the people of his time and to us today. (1JN 5:13)

He wants us to know that God has given us eternal life through Jesus. "He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life." Chap. 5:11-12.

How can the writer of this letter be sure that God wants us to live forever? He tells us in the first verses of the letter:

"That which was from the beginning,
which we have heard,
which we have seen with our eyes,
which we have looked at
and our hands have touched
- this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.
The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it
and we proclaim to you what we have seen and heard,
so that you also may have fellowshiop with us.
And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ."
